6 April

A new tax year starts

Since 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 keep digital records under Making Tax Digital. From 6 April 2027 the threshold drops to £30,000.

What we do: Set your records up for the year, in Xero or a spreadsheet with bridging software.

  1. 6 April: A new tax year starts. Since 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 keep digital records under Making Tax Digital. From 6 April 2027 the threshold drops to £30,000. What we do: Set your records up for the year, in Xero or a spreadsheet with bridging software.
  2. 6 July: P11D forms for staff benefits. If you give employees benefits such as a company car or health cover, last year's P11D forms are due today. What we do: Prepare the P11Ds and file them for you.
  3. 7 August: First quarterly update. Under Making Tax Digital, the update for 6 April to 5 July goes to HMRC. It's a summary of income and costs, not a tax bill. What we do: Send it from your records and tell you how the year is shaping up.
  4. 5 October: Newly self-employed? Register by now. Started working for yourself or letting property last tax year? Tell HMRC by 5 October so you can file your first return. What we do: Register you with HMRC and get your Unique Taxpayer Reference.
  5. 31 October: Paper tax returns due. The deadline for a paper self assessment return. Filing online gives you until 31 January. The second quarterly update follows on 7 November. What we do: File online for you, well before either date.
  6. 31 January: Online tax return and payment. The big one: your online return, any tax you owe and your first payment on account. The third quarterly update follows on 7 February. What we do: Have your return filed weeks early and tell you exactly what to pay and when.
  7. 7 May: Final quarterly update. The update for 6 January to 5 April. Then your year-end return pulls everything together and confirms your tax. What we do: Send the last update and get started on your year-end return.

Family values, properly licensed

The practice grew out of helping friends and family with their books. Today it's an IAB licensed practice with AAT and CIPP membership.

We started this because friends kept asking for help with their books. The practice has grown, but the rule hasn't changed: treat every client like a neighbour.
